Baluster Jug

These are reproductions of German stoneware baluster jugs that were made in the 16th and 17th centuries in the Westerwald region and in Raeren (present-day Belgium). The most popular design on these jugs is the "Farmer's Dance" (Bauerntanz) even though the jugs were used by upper levels of society. The legend reads:

"Piper, play faster, then the farmers will dance as if they are racing
Whoever wants to keep his head should let the farmers have their dance."

A baluster jug depicting the biblical story of The Prodigal Son was found in the c. 1617-1625 well that is interpreted in the Archaearium.
